Can you obey God?

Andrew Sisson

So many verses in 1 John point to a simple fact, “hereby we do know
that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. “(2:3) Yet so many
Christians live like they are doing their devotions in Romans 7. Doing
exactly what their body wants is normal to most–and what is worst is
that they don’t very often feel badly for it. Now I am not suggesting
that every Christian is going to appear perfect in every action and
attitude. But if we see things from God’s perspective (who knows our
hearts), are we daily doing things that we know are wrong? And if so,
who do we really believe in? I am speaking to the modern Christian.

Oil of Gladness

Mike Charleston

According to Hebrews 1:9 and Isaiah 61:3, Jesus is anointed with the oil of gladness above his fellows.  He was the most joyful, glad, thankful, happy person that ever lived.  Yes, he was the man of sorrows also, but I believe that was when he was taking our sin to the cross. (Isaiah 53) He lived a pure and holy life, not touched by sin.  We can’t even imagine a life like that.  We can taste a little bit of that down here now that we are freed from sin and alive unto God.  But, to know a whole life without sin would be amazing!  Jesus came to set us free and to give us life!

At Bible study the other day, we were discussing if we could walk closer to the Lord than Adam did in the garden. …

Get Rid of the Coffee Table!

In all my travels, I’ve been in many houses. Once inside, I like to do scientific observation. OK, so maybe it’s not scientific, but I do observe many things. You can tell a lot about a family just by looking around for a little while. You can usually guess what goes on in the house and what is important to the family just by observing. I like to look at the layout of the house, pictures on the wall, how nice or expensive things are, if the house is clean and well organized, etc. As I stand in the “living or family” room, I am amazed at how uncreative people are. For the most part, all the “living” rooms look alike.…

Business or Family?

Mike Charleston

Recently, I had a friend ask me to help him with things that were going on in his church.  The pastor wasn’t “hip” enough, and didn’t have a good enough “vision.”  So, the people wanted him out to put a younger, more relevant person in his place.  My friend asked if I had any information on whether or not the church should be run like a business.  Of course, I had some information on the subject and would be glad to pass it on to him.  I grew up when the internet was pretty new, so I downloaded and saved everything I found in the early 2000’s.  I hadn’t actually looked up anything on the subject in a while. …
